Utilities are lowering maintenance costs and improving service with thermal inspections

Utility technicians have long used Fluke digital multimeters and clamps for everyday electrical maintenance, because of their safety, accuracy, and ruggedness.

The new story centers on Fluke thermal imagers. Once an expensive, emergency-only solution, thermal imagers are now affordable enough that utilities can apply them for both comprehensive preventive inspections and regular troubleshooting.

The benefits include:

  1. Regular inspection of expensive equipment, such as substation transformers or regulators, helps prevent premature failure.
  2. Troubleshooting outages with thermal imagers can be significantly faster, reducing both the outage length and the related maintenance overtime.

Keith Weyh, technical services supervisor at Adams Columbia Electric Cooperative (ACEC) in Wisconsin, monitors the health of the co-op’s equipment and the equipment of its members.
