Sustainable Operations

WESCO is working with its suppliers and other organizations to measure and reduce the company's environmental impact. As a leading distributor of electrical products and services, WESCO understands the importance of "walking the talk" when it comes to energy efficiency, renewable energy, and green buildings.

WESCO has a long history of leadership in energy efficiency, having been honored by the EPA as a "Green Distributor of the Year" and being recognized by Veolia with its 2008 Environmental Stewardship Award. In 2008 WESCO began reporting to the Carbon Disclosure Project, and in 2010 opened its first LEED Gold facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.

LEDsEnergy efficiency and energy conservation in WESCO facilities: WESCO is working to drive energy conservation and energy efficiency in our facilities. Our energy and greenhouse gas management efforts include regular building energy opportunity assessments, facility manager energy management checklists and job aides, and a significant number of lighting, lighting controls, and HVAC upgrades each year in our building portfolio. We are working with leading suppliers including Phillips, Eaton, Leviton, and Cooper to ensure that we are integrating the best energy efficiency and energy management technologies into our buildings as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. Our expertise in energy efficiency is also available to customers as part of our WESCO Value Creation services program

Green BuildingsGreen building and green leases: In 2010, WESCO began working with landlords to ensure that all new and renewed leases included requirements specifying energy efficient lighting (32-watt T-8 or better) in all WESCO facilities. Lease negotiations have also included partnering with landlords around green building improvements including reflective roofs, environmentally-friendly office remodeling materials, furniture, and carpets, and sometimes major upgrades to building mechanical systems. In 2010 WESCO opened its first LEED Gold facility in 2010. The success of this green building process was largely a result of our partnership with our landlord at the site, who worked with WESCO and our suppliers to integrate green building technology into the renovated facility.

Solar PanelRenewable energy: Working with customers across a number of industries, WESCO has provided solar panels and wind turbines, inverters, and mounting and racking systems to hundreds of projects representing several megawatts of renewable energy. This year WESCO is installing a 250-kilowatt solar PV system at its Honolulu, Hawaii branch, and plans to install additional renewable energy systems on a number of other branches. Sustainability reporting and affiliations: WESCO is an EPA ENERGY STAR partner and a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. We also report our energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to the Carbon Disclosure Project. WESCO has been an active supporter of the Greenbuild and Solar Power International conferences, as well as GovEnergy and regional energy efficiency and renewable energy events.

Sustainability success stories: WESCO's efforts in reducing its environmental impact are well documented. Read more about sustainability programs and successes in our individual facilities.
