Jackets have been commonly used on all solid dielectric cables across Europe since their development. Their use created another assembly problem, in that they had to be sealed to prevent water from being trapped between the jacket and the metallic shield of the cable. With the expansion of jacketed cable use in the US, various methods of sealing the area between connecting device and cable jacket were developed. Following the European styles, sealer and tape became common. Premolded devices, heat shrink and cold shrink devices were also developed. Each added yet another piece to the requirements for assembling connectors. As a solution to this problem, Thomas & Betts’ Elastimold brand created a termination that included a terminator to cable jacket seal. This was the first integral seal in the utility industry specifically designed for this purpose.
