CASE STUDY

Helping Sports Arenas Shine Brighter

Customer: McCormick Arena, Toronto, Canada

Project

Wesco Energy Solutions worked with the City of Toronto to install new interior and exterior LED fixtures at the McCormick arena. The McCormick arena is a community-based facility serving the Parkdale area of Toronto since 1972. This year-round facility houses two ice surfaces including on official size rink 180’ x 80’ and a studio size rink 180’ x 50’.

Solution

The focus of the project was to save energy, increase safety, reduce maintenance and improve light levels throughout the facility. In addition to the main arena housing the ice rinks, the scope of work included the corridor, multipurpose room, change rooms, restrooms, office and a conference room. The existing high-intensity discharge (HID) fixtures over the two ice pads were replaced with LED high bays and the incandescent night lighting was replace with LED vapor tight luminaries. New LED exterior fixtures and photocell control were installed to replace existing 100-150W HID.

A key focus for the project was to leverage advanced controls to maximize energy savings. Local occupancy sensors were installed in the change rooms. A wireless control system was installed to control the rink lighting, allowing for dimming and more granular control.

Results

  • Reduction of 200,000 kWh annually
  • Reduction of 300 Kw of demand
  • The reduction is the equivalent of eliminating approximately 18 family homes from the electric grid
