Management Expertise Delivers for Wesco Branch and Large IOU

Challenge

The Wesco branch in Bayonne, New Jersey, pursued a contract to provide rubber goods testing for a large investor owned utility (IOU). We subcontracted testing to a third-party testing lab. Th is testing lab informed the Wesco branch that they would no longer be supporting our IOU customers' business.

Wesco was required to find an alternative means of providing rubber goods testing for an estimated 40,000 units a year in a 60-day window. The testing facility needed to have the capability of testing all products, the production capacity to handle the volume of testing, and the storage volume to handle the management of the customer's inventory.

Rubber goods products to be tested included gloves, sleeves, blankets, line hoses, and hoods/connectors/covers. Accurate reporting of inventory tracking, branch delivery/pick-up logistics of materials and storage of inventory at the testing facility were further requirements for this extensive management program.

Solution

The Wesco team was able to meet all the requirements of the Wesco location and the end-user within the 60-day timeframe outlined with no downtime. The new vendor was able to accommodate rubber goods testing of 40,000 units per year for the vast array of products needed, provide training to location employees, and document the entire process for the staff.

Summary

  • Added company tractor trailer and driver to meet logistics capacity
  • Created documentation detailing service expectations with customer and end user
  • Identified opportunities for usage adjustments in cooperation with end user, resulting in cost savings and inventory reductions
  • Rapidly expanded production capacity with head count while implementing an aggressive training schedule for inspection technicians
